New BSO Chairman of the Board

[Edmund F. Kelly]
Edmund (Ted) F. Kelly

The Boston Symphony Orchestra has announced the election of Edmund (Ted) F. Kelly as the new chairman of the BSO Board of Trustees, a three-year term to take effect as of September 1, 2011. In addition, the BSO Board of Trustees has elected Stephen B. Kay and Robert P. O'Block to serve as co-chairmen, effective immediately, with terms running through August 31, 2011. Mr. Kay and Mr. O'Block will fulfill the duties of the role left vacant by the recent passing of Edward H. Linde, who was chairman of the BSO Board of Trustees from September 2005 through January 2010, and whose term as chairman was to have ended in August 2011.

The Chairman of the BSO Board of Trustees works closely with fellow board members and BSO Managing Director Mark Volpe and his senior management team to meet the organization's fiscal goals and to serve the mission of the BSO to create performances and provide educational and training programs at the highest level of excellence, and to bring the music of the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops to audiences here in Boston, across the country, and around the world through live performances, recordings, and the many opportunities on the worldwide web. The BSO Board Chairman serves as the organization's leading ambassador for increasing awareness and understanding of the role that the BSO plays in the musical world and its importance as a cultural resource in Boston, the Berkshires, and beyond.
